As usual, the 2016 A Level H2 Maths Paper 1 has a few non-standard questions such as Question 3, Question 7(a) and Question 10(b). The rest of the questions are quite standard and the student’s score is dependent on how familiar the student is with the questions and whether he/she is able to solve the questions with speed and accuracy.

Question 3 on Transformations of curve is not the usual standard type. Students may find this question difficult to comprehend unless they can relate and apply the concepts on transformations of graphs.

Question 7(a) on finding second complex root of equation when the coefficients are not real may be difficult for students who have not solved this type of question before.

Question 10(b) on Functions is also non standard but it is not difficult at all if the students just solve the given function in the question accordingly and apply the condition for the existence of the inverse function.

Comments on 2016 A Level H2 Maths Paper 2

For Section A on Pure Mathematics, the topics for Pure Maths questions came out as expected based on what has already been tested in Paper 1. The topics (as predicted) that come out are Applications of Differentiation, Integration Techniques (By substitution, By Parts) and Applications (Area and Volume – parametric equations) and Complex Numbers (De Moivre’s Theorem and Loci).

Most questions are standard but tedious to solve. Students must have sufficient practice and exposure to different types of questions in order to be familiar and able to solve all types of questions, especially for Complex numbers.

For Section B on Statistics, the questions are standard but students must be very careful and consider all cases in their calculations, especially for Permutations & Combinations and Probability questions.

Question 8(i) on plotting Scatter diagram on graph paper caught everyone by surprise as we usually sketch Scatter diagram on foolscap paper. A lot of time could be taken up just to obtain the 2 marks. Students may also have difficulty with explaining the signs of c and d in Q8(iii).

Question 9(b) and 10(v) require the students to use the probability formulae for Binomial and Poisson Distribution found in MF15 and solving equations using GC.
